Power BI and Tableau are two of the most widely used business intelligence tools. Both can build the dashboards most organizations need. The better question is which one fits you.
Start with what you already use

If your organization runs on Microsoft products such as Microsoft 365, Excel and Azure, Power BI usually fits in easily. Sign-in, sharing and data connections tend to work with little setup. If your data lives in many different systems and your team already has Tableau skills, Tableau is a natural choice.

Think about who will use it
  1. Business users who live in Excel often find Power BI familiar and quick to learn.
  2. Analysts who want to explore data visually often prefer Tableau’s flexibility for building custom charts and following a hunch.
Consider cost and licensing

Pricing for both changes from time to time and depends on how many people need to build and how many only need to view. Compare current prices for your own team size before deciding. Include the cost of training and support, not just licences.

Do not forget the data underneath

The tool matters less than people think. A dashboard built on messy, inconsistent data will disappoint in either one. Spending effort on clean, well-defined data usually gives a bigger return than spending it on choosing between tools.

A simple way to decide
  1. List the questions your dashboards must answer.
  2. Note which systems hold the data and which tools your team already knows.
  3. Build the same small dashboard in both, using real data, and let your users try each.
  4. Choose the one your team will actually use.
