If your reports are late, wrong or different every time you run them, the problem is rarely the report. It is usually the data pipeline underneath.
What a data pipeline is
A data pipeline is the set of automated steps that collect data from where it is created, such as your accounting system, your website or your equipment, clean it up, and deliver it to a place where people can use it. Think of it as plumbing. When it works, nobody notices. When it leaks, everything downstream is affected.
Why reports break
- Manual steps. Someone downloads a file, edits it in a spreadsheet and uploads it. One missed step, and the report is wrong.
- No checks. Data arrives with missing values, duplicates or a changed format, and nothing flags it.
- Different definitions. Two teams count “active customer” differently, so their reports never match.
- Fragile connections. A system is updated, a field is renamed, and the pipeline stops working without anyone being told.
Signs your pipeline needs attention
- Month-end reporting takes days of manual work
- People keep their own spreadsheets because they do not trust the official numbers
- Nobody can say exactly where a figure came from
- A small change in one system causes surprises in another
What a healthy pipeline looks like
It runs on a schedule without human help. It checks the data as it arrives and raises an alert when something looks wrong. It keeps a record of where every figure came from. And it is documented, so the person who built it is not the only one who understands it.
Where to start
You do not need to rebuild everything. Pick the one report that causes the most pain and trace it back to its sources. Often a few targeted fixes, such as automating one manual step and adding basic checks, remove most of the problem.
